What We Bring was inspired by a street in one of the old neighborhoods in Athens associated with Ariana Gerstein’s current documentary project.
It’s a place where many layers of history lay exposed, but are not always recognized. The Acropolis is visible, but other signs of national and personal history are also part of the landscape: markets that have been run the same way for a hundred years, bullet holes in the wall from wars and occupation, and places where the artists’ family once lived and worked.
On the Athens street that inspired the installation, clothes often hang from a line above, reminiscent of the colorful lights that decorate so many other city streets.
In contrast to much of LUMA, the projections illuminate not city walls but the spaces between them–clothing collected from local thrift stores perhaps waving in the breeze.
The title refers to a connection we feel with the fabrics we pack and wear–but also to the deeply personal memories they hold.
