Six robotic arms perform the handshake, over and over. Ruth Martinez-Yepes built Handshakes out of audiovisual archives of peace agreements, abstracting those gestures into a synchronized mechanical choreography paired with projection and sound. Assembling that dataset became central to the work—revisiting the collective visual memory of reconciliation and how it was framed for cameras. What remains is the gesture without its people: familiar and estranged at once, and a question about how images of peace get repeated and used.
