A meditative sonic communion with outer space.
Cosmic Harp invites the public to interact with a laser harp tuned to the movement of satellites and space debris. Using real-time orbital data, it sonifies the sky: strings respond to human touch, while tones are shaped by the invisible infrastructure above communication, navigation, entertainment, finance satellites. As debris flies in and out of view, the harp changes its sound — at times beautiful, and at times distorted and cacophonous.
The work is part of the artist’s ongoing project exploring the downsides of human invention and our entanglement with tools. As our appetite for technology grows, we launch ever more satellites, fast enclosing ourselves in a shell of shrieking metal moving at 18,000 miles per hour.
