LUMA illuminates creative works using the beautiful architecture of Downtown Binghamton as its canvas. LUMA is the premiere projection mapping festival in Upstate New York. And it’s easily the largest festival for Downtown Binghamton, bringing over 30,000 people into the streets in one night.
But LUMA is even more than that. It’s a commitment to community and to helping to revitalize our city through the arts.
We produce LUMA because we love the art form, but we also work closely with Binghamton community members, businesses and city officials to ensure the festival benefits our town. Our goal, through this free arts and entertainment festival, is to bring as many people as we can into Downtown Binghamton to experience its vibrancy and to patronize its unique businesses.
Some of the other ways we try to give back to the community include:
- The festival is free and open to the public, with many thanks to our generous community sponsors who help make this possible.
- LUMA built a virtual Crowd Sourced Art Gallery, curated by local not-for-profit The Memory Maker Project, and exposing dozens of local emerging artists to 25,000 visitors.
- The festival has hosted a competition for emerging artists, with a $5000 prize for the winning artist.
- The Binghamton Philharmonic and LUMA worked together for a special animated feature, exposing new listeners to classical music with a free performance for tens of thousands of people.
- Throughout the year, we offer free projection mapping classes for emerging artists in the region.
- LUMA’s estimated one-night economic impact is $900,000.
Every LUMA festival showcases the unique talents of the many professionals in our community. We hope the continued recognition of this event, the city and its people can only add to Binghamton’s reputation as a growing and revitalizing community with so many great talents and attractions.
