LUMA Storytellers Conference

LUMA Storytellers Conference

67 Washington Street
September 9, 2018 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

LUMA is an arts festivals, yes, but it’s much more. We push boundaries, drive innovation and ask: what does the future of storytelling hold? In 2018, the festival will unveil the LUMA Storytellers Conference, our attempt to do dive deep away from the roar of the crowd. Individuals at the top of their respective fields, be they writers, animators, directors–will share what they’ve learned from years of work in the industry. Guests will be drawn from theater, music, film, VR, AR, immersive performance and, of course, projection mapping. We’ll cross-pollinate ideas to inspire great minds to build something even greater.

Xavi Bove and Onionlab are both constantly reinventing themselves as artists. Last year, Onionlab brought stereoscopic 3D to Binghamton. This year, an orchestral light show. What draws them to the projects they choose? How do they imagine fully immersive experiences that celebrate music, architecture and light? And what’s the technology that makes it all go?

BEHIND THE SCENES: THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE

LUMA festival co-founder Joshua Bernard interviews Ryan Uzilevsky from Light Harvest, the creative force behind some of LUMA’s most compelling narrative animations. How do story and architecture merge? How has Light Harvest come to find dance at the center of its recent work for the festival? What’s next for Light Harvest and LUMA?

A TALK WITH MINNOW MOUNTAIN PRODUCTIONS
Binghamton University Downtown Center (67 Washington St)

Animation for adults–what began with the Simpsons 30 years ago has become an incredibly diverse medium. Minnow Mountain is in the process of developing a new adult-targeted animation series for Amazon. But their rotoscoping technique has brought a surprisingly resonant energy to crime documentaries, science fiction and much more. Hear about Craig Stagg’s work on A Scanner Darkly and both Craig and Steph Swope’s development of Tower and Undone.

2:30 PM – 3:30 PM

LET’S GET INTO CHARACTER
Binghamton University Downtown Center (67 Washington St)

From the page to the computer monitor to the finished animated project, what makes characters from raw pixels can be hard to describe. We explore how it’s done with animator Wade Ryer (Dreamworks, Framestore), Kevin Richardson (Parallax Media), Mason and Mick Mastroianni (BC Comics). Kevin, Mason and Mick are currently developing a film version of BC. Get some insight into their process and see a few concept images that are helping to flesh out the concept.
